Students of Czech studies at Cairo University Ain Shams receive a significant discount on courses
Marwan Alsolaiman was born in Damascus, studied at the Czech Technical University in the 1980s, and permanently settled in Prague in the 1990s. He has been teaching Czech as a foreign language for more than 20 years and is also an excellent musician involved in several musical groups.
We closely cooperate with Ain Shams University and its Czech language department. We assist in organizing language and literary seminars, provide methodological materials, and connect academic staff with students. We often organize special events and meetings with relevant guests for both the students and the university staff.
In addition to teaching itself, we also focus on helping students in Egypt to explore Czech culture in the broadest contexts. We perceive language as a natural way to understand culture, and therefore we strive to ensure that studying Czech also offers a deeper understanding of Czech identity.
Czech language courses are complemented directly in Cairo by a regular conversation club Servírujeme češtinu . With the participation of native Czech speakers, it is well attended by students and graduates of Czech studies from Ain Shams University. The conversation club usually offers topics related to Czech culture (customs and traditions, Czech UNESCO heritage, etc.).
In 2024, the Czech Centre Cairo, together with Instituto Cervantes El Cairo , was at the birth of a significant event – the celebration of the European Day of Languages. The first edition of the European Day of Languages in Cairo was attended by embassies and cultural institutes from eleven European countries, including Ukraine. In September 2025, the event was already under the patronage of the EU Delegation in Egypt, interest further increased, and sixteen states joined the program, including invited Turkey and Great Britain. The participation of EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst added extraordinary prestige to the event.
In both editions, the European Day of Languages offered a morning program for several hundred high school students from various Cairo schools. Students could participate in so-called Lessons Zero, short sample lessons emphasizing smaller European languages, including Czech. The afternoon part for the general public then combined presentations of individual countries at booths with a diverse range of language activities, games, concerts, and slam poetry. The first edition culminated in a slam showcase, where four Czech slam poets presented their performances alongside four Egyptian poets.
