The traveling exhibition project Beyond Paper Plane begins its journey in Egypt at Bibliothek Egypt and showcases contemporary Czech illustrators and artists with a special emphasis on children's work. The curatorial selection focuses on books that work with three-dimensional space and connect the book object with an autonomous artwork. Here, the book is not just a carrier of a story, but itself becomes a space for visual, haptic, and playful experiences.
The selected publications utilize spatial solutions, unconventional materials, and an emphasis on materiality, thereby expanding the possibilities of perceiving the book as a medium. Authenticity and the use of touch allow the child reader a deeper engagement with the narrative and support their creativity. Contemporary children's books thus present themselves not only as a means of visual communication but also as a tool for further interactive and educational use – from hand-enhancing illustrations to their possible transfer into digital or virtual environments.
The Beyond Paper Plane exhibition is presented by the Czech Center Cairo at Bibliothek Egypt, complemented by a series of accompanying events.
