Exhibition GEN-Z DIS/CONNECTED VIEW

The collective exhibition GEN-Z DIS/CONNECTED VIEW, curated by Czech art historian and curator Daniela Kramer, presents works by 28 young Egyptian artists from Generation Z.

The concept of the exhibition speaks to the success and undeniable versatility of Generation Z. It is a tribute to the artistic abilities, diversity, and multitude of talents that this generation possesses – a celebration of art and youth together.

GEN-Z is a new program of Shelter Art Space that will focus on young talents from Generation Z and will bring a new curatorial concept each year.

Generation Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2012. Its members are the first generation to grow up with the internet and portable digital technologies from an early age, which is why they are also called "digital natives." Their key characteristic is connectivity. However, in real life, this can lead to isolation and limit the ability to create closeness.

In addition to the general characteristics of Generation Z, the exhibition GEN-Z DIS/CONNECTED VIEW will focus on the specifics of this generation in Egypt, whose position arises from historical specifics and the current situation.

The central theme that connects all the works is the self-portraits of the artists or their other portrait and figurative creations. The exhibition features paintings, photographs, objects, and videos by artists from various regions of Egypt. The selection of artists and the concept of the exhibition were carried out by Czech curator Daniela Kramer.

On Saturday, December 9, 2023, a discussion was also held with Daniela Kramer and selected artists who participated in the exhibition. During it, they spoke about their artistic journey, methods of their practice, the concepts of their projects, and what it means for them to be part of the broader Generation Z community.
