The next step within the Reading Czech project will be a new reading challenge focused on a classic of Czech literature – the play The Mother (1938) by Karel Čapek, a world-renowned writer and the coiner of the word “robot.” This anti-war drama follows a mother who gradually loses her husband and sons to wars and ideological conflicts.
Following contemporary prose, we will thus move naturally to a work that opens strong themes of family, responsibility, and moral dilemmas, offering space for deeper reflection across cultural contexts. The follow-up Czech Book Club meeting is planned for the first week of June.
