Safe Spaces: What is a Safe Space, weekly workshop with Mortagal

Mortagal and the Czech Center Cairo invite participants of all ages and backgrounds to seven intensive training days during which they will embark on a journey into the world of art with the aim of exploring the meaning of the term Safe Space . The program connects contemporary dance, writing, storytelling, collage, acting, mask work, object theater, and drawing, offering space for personal development and free self-expression.

The team Mortagal has systematically addressed the question of what a safe environment means for individuals and communities over the past six years. They have developed their work across various cultures and social groups – with children, adults, women, and men, in settings ranging from Aswan to Alexandria. In Upper Egypt, they focused on topics such as violence prevention, worked in the fields of education, capacity building, and facilitator training.

Mortagal has experimented with many forms of performative and visual arts during this journey – with storytelling, masks, visual art, drawing, collage, and leather crafting. Despite their rich experiences, the main question remains open: what does Safe Space truly mean and how do we create it together? The program will culminate in a joint final performance that will showcase the results of the participants' collective creative work. The workshop is part of the long-term Safe Spaces program.
