The screening of the Czech film Milada, directed by David Mrnka, took place at the popular Zawya Cinema in Downtown Cairo. The film presents the life of lawyer, politician, and human rights activist Milada Horáková.
This powerful story of resistance, courage, and the struggle for freedom and democracy during the period of communist rule in Czechoslovakia shows how extraordinary Milada Horáková was. She refused to submit to the principles of the regime and was put on trial.
Although she was a skilled lawyer, the trial followed a predetermined script. Milada Horáková was found guilty and later executed by hanging. To this day, she remains an icon of human rights and gender equality, and her memory is commemorated annually in Czechia.
The screening at Zawya Cinema in Cairo was part of the year-long project Czech and Egyptian Heroines. The event also included a discussion organized in cooperation with the partner organization Ambassadors for Dialogue.
